  1. Mexico has a higher percentage of extreme poverty than India, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil, Algeria or any other country with similar economic development, according to the CIA World Factbook 2002.
  2. The minimum wage for those who have a job is less than US$4.00 a day, not an hour but a day. Prices for food and other necessities are similar to those in the U.S. or Canada. Imagine providing food, transportation, shelter, medical care and education for your family on $4.00 a day!
  3. Child malnutrition in the state of Morelos.
    •  10 to 20% of the child population under 5 years are shorter than average
    •  6% of the kids at kindergarten are underweight
    • 12.2% of the child population under 5 years  present cronic malnutrition (the child stops growing and are short for their age)

Many NGOs are helping to feed and clothe local families. One of the NGOs working to change this reality is VAMOS A.C. One of their projects is to provide the children of Cuernavaca vitamins to help them grow and develop in a better way.

A 2006 study by the University of Harvard showed that increased vitamin intake in Mexican children reduces the chance of infections and the severity of diarrhea. By taking Vitamin A supplements the children were found to react less to infections such as E-Coli. The National Institute of Nutrition in Mexico City carried out similar research on the effect of vitamins on Mexican children and also found health benefits associated with taking zinc and iron supplements.

Hope: “Together we can save children´s lives”

Through the years Our Cabaña has supported the work of the different local NGOs and their campaigns.

In 2010 Our Cabaña  launched this campaign to support the labor of the VAMOS & Ministerios Amor Organization and collected with the members of our Organization hundred of “Bags of Health”. In 2011, we will continue and we expect to collect even more than in 2010.

As Girl Guides and Girl Scouts we are responsible for building a better future for the next generation. If we work together, we can hope for a better future.

Give

All those interested in taking part in the project will donate a “Bag of Health” that will contain two basic elements: a pot of chewable vitamins for children and a table game. These two items will support the development of the kids by helping them grow strong and also providing them with activities to encourage their brain development.
