New Year Event 09-10
Tuesday December 29, 2009
Today we had our first colour ceremony. Here we all danced around the flag pole. We then went over and did our group photos. There were many pictures taken as we did a group pictures and then our travel groups. We learned about Mexican traditions, including how to make guacamole, “Papel Picado” (cut out designs in tissue paper), learned how to play the Ocarina (a traditional Mexican clay flute), and decorating a Pinata for our upcoming New Year’s celebration. We then created our own buttons with our names in the crafthouse.
After lunch, we were able to enjoy the sun and the pool and the “World Centres Game” which helped us learn more about the different World Centres. The lucky winners of the game all jumped into the pool, clothes and all!
After dinner we learned all about the history of Our Cabana, by presenting skits. People dressed the part of the character, and had a great time.
Tomorrow we look forward to our trip to Taxco.

A beautiful sunny day, we went to Taxco. Mountains and more mountains on the way. A friendly Mexican told us how silver was mined and explained how to tell real silver from the marks on the base. Some silver was mixed with zinc to make it workable. We saw rings, teapots, braclets, animals, ear rings, letter openers and many more beautiful silver items. We walked through the town noticing many Volkswagen Beetles and red scooters with children on the front! We reached a square called Zocalo infront of a beautiful cathedral. Amazing gold decoration inside and many people. Everyone was so friendly and pleasant. Coffee by a fountain was delicious.
It was Brenda's birthday today, she had a birthday hat to wear. Tonight we are going to learn Salsa dancing if we have any energy.'

Hola to all the girl guides and girl scouts out there!
Happy New Year! Finally it’s the first day of 2010 the start of new beginnings, new
adventures, new friends and new challenges. Today all of us are pretty tired from our late night celebration for New Years Eve last night. It was awesome to be part of the First Centennial of WAGGS. So because of the fact that we are all pretty tired today, we had a calmer day. This afternoon we worked on getting a Girls World Wide Say badge. We made cards, friendship bracelets. Later on we got an egg for a baby and had to care for it while working different minor jobs like making beds and washing clothes. This was to imitate what it was like for different women in the earlier years. It was challenging but tons of fun. After that there was a bunch of different stations with activities around. We got to make boxes from recycled paper and rocket ships with Alka-Seltzer and vinegar. Tonight we had karaoke. It was a fun day today and I can’t wait to start tomorrow!
GO CABANA!

Amistad es lo que nos une,
y lo que nos hace progresar.
Make new friends.
but keep the old.
One is silver
the other is gold.
Se feliz, vive para server, se Guia de corazon
Be happy, live to serve, be a Guide from the heart

Today we visited Tepoztlan, a picturesque town surrrounded by bizarre cliff-like mountain walls. Tepoztlan's greatest attraction is the former Dominican monestry with its beautiful frescos. We also visited the market where meat, vegetables, toys and all kinds of local crafts could be bought. Most of us enjoyed icecream from a shop which sold every kind of icecream we could imagine.
In the afternoon some of us walked to the nearby pyramids at Teopanzolco while others started to decorate a wall at Our Cabana with flowers as part of the WAGGS theme for 2010 which is "plants".
We finished the evening with a quiz on Mexican history and WAGGGS.
