Safety and Security

Cuernavaca is a large and safe city and we at Our Cabaña feel very comfortable living Cuernavaca Zocalohere. However, you should follow all safety precautions that you would take in any large city. Common sense should be your guide. It is not advisable to go out on your own late at night, and it is always recommended to let others know where you are going. A sign in/out register is located at the front doors and all guests are requested to use it.
Our Cabaña has a security guard on duty 24 hours a day to assist with emergencies and watch the door. 10:30 pm is the curfew time at Our Cabaña.

All valuables including passports, money and tickets can be stored in a small lockable cupboard located next to your bed.

Out and About

Like in any city around the world, it is important to be street-wise whilst out and about in Mexico. Look after your belongings and keep an eye on your and your friends’ bags. Markets and crowded places are favourites of pickpockets, so keep your bag closed and close to you. Be conscientious and do not flash your money or valuables around – not only might it attract pick pockets, but it is also culturally insensitive.

To stay safe whilst out and about:

  • Beware of traffic. Drivers are quite aggressive due the large population. Be sure you look both ways before entering a roadway.
  • Always keep the door to your hotel room locked and only open it for someone you know. Call the office if you are unsure who is at the door.
  • Understand hotel emergency systems and escape routes.
  • Stay in groups and always use the buddy system to track everyone’s whereabouts.
  • Carry some form of identification. Make sure each member of your group knows the address and phone number where you are staying.
  • Do not carry travel documents with you. Leave then in a locked suitcase in your locked hotel room.
  • Watch where you are walking – Mexican sidewalks can be uneven or non-existent.
  • Do not draw attention to yourself in public. If someone tries to get your attention, ignore them and keep walking. Stay with your group to avoid being hassled.

We were in Mexico City on St Valentine's Day & the centre of the city was packed, but at no time did we feel threatened.
On the monday we went to stay at Our Cabana & it was fantastic. In fact when we went to the local shops one afternoon, one of the locals stopped the traffic so we could cross the road.
We found the Mexican people very friendly & willing to please, but as the others have said, you need to take the same precautions that you would in any large city, including London

I recently returned from Cabana, wonderfull Monarch Butterfly session. I felt safe on our whole trip. THey advised where it was safe to go and we always went in groups. there was some demonstrations in Mexico City, but we were informed of area it was in and avoided it.The Cabana staff is very helpful. The guided are also helpful and can be very entertaining. I would travel to Cabanna again.

I, too, recently returned from spending 3 weeks in Mexico. In addition to 3 nights at Ticalli (in Mexico City) and 10 days at Our Cabana, we travelled to Villahermosa and Merida. At no time did anyone in our group feel the least bit insecure.

All that is required is to exercise a little bit of common sense. And remember that none of the places you will be visiting while at Cabana is anywhere near the border areas where so much is publicized about difficulties.

We all had a wonderful time in all the places we went in Mexico and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Though I was unable to go with my group to the recent Thinking Day & Butterfly Session, I have been twice before and at no time felt unsafe. I have also stayed at Ticalli. Both staffs look after you very well and all times have your safety in mind. Just be cautious as you would in any kind of travel.

I have just returned from my third visit to Cabana and Ticalli. It was an awesome experience and at no time did I ever feel unsafe or concerned about safety. The staff at both places do a great job of taking care of you. We took the usual precautions of not carrying too much money and id with us when we were out and about; traveling in at least groups of 2; being aware of our surroundings and basically common sense. Before we left on this trip, some people had seen reports of violence etc and I reassured them that we were far away from where that is happening. As well, being Guiding members and traveling in Guiding wear with Cabana and around Mexico City makes a difference. You are greeted with smiles and they know who you are. I encourage guiders in my division to travel to Cabana with or without girls. It is the best experience and they don't have to worry.

I travelled with 2 other leaders to Mexico in Feb. arriving at Mexico City in the dark we were a little concerned, but we were quickly met by an English speaking taxi driver who took us to Ticalli (a gated secure building). We spent 2 days in Mexico City walking the streets and visiting the wonderful buildings at no point did we feel at all insecure.
Once at 'Our Cabana' we felt even more protected and safe even on an excursion to the Pyramids or to the old town centre we were amazed at how friendly everyone was. I then travelled on my own to the north of Mexico for 10 days and again although there were a few more armed police around everyone was so helpful and friendly, my spanish is very limited but my attempts to communicate were met with friendliness and a determination to try and understand even if resorting to sign language. It is a beautiful country that I fell in love with and would return without hesitation.

We just came back from a fabulous trip to Our Cabana and see the Monarch Butterflies. Everything was beautifully planned and well executed. Everyone we met in Mexico City and Cuernavaca were friendly. The Our Cabana Staff is fabulous! They make sure everything is safe and fun.

I just returned from Our Cabana after a three week stay in Mexico and Our Cabana.
At no time did I feel unsafe at Our Cabana and in Mexico.
When I arrived at the airport in Mexico City, I also felt safe. We had an English speaking guide that met us at the airport and took us right to Ticalli. Ticalli is also a gated Girl Scout & Girl Guide house and is very safe. Our Cabana , I felt that it also was very safe.
You have to be cautious anywhere that you go even in the US and other countries.
I think that what you hear about it not being safe is on the borders where there might be drugs and lots of college students on college breaks.

I felt that Mexico City and Cuernavaca was as safe as any large city anywhere. You just have to take precautions like you would at home.

Judy - 18 March 2009 - 10.48AM (GMT)

I visited Our Cabana for the first time in April 2007. I was travelling by myself and I felt quite nervous as many people back home had told me that Mexico was not safe. However, I had no problems at all, and I felt very safe all the time, both in Mexico and in Cuernavaca. The Our Cabana staff look after you very well, and in Mexico City you just need to be sensible eg don't walk down deserted streets alone! I would definitely encourage everyone to visit Our Cabana!
