Safety and Security

Cuernavaca is a large and safe city and we at Our Cabaña feel very comfortable living Cuernavaca Zocalohere. However, you should follow all safety precautions that you would take in any large city. Common sense should be your guide. It is not advisable to go out on your own late at night, and it is always recommended to let others know where you are going. A sign in/out register is located at the front doors and all guests are requested to use it.
Our Cabaña has a security guard on duty 24 hours a day to assist with emergencies and watch the door. 10:30 pm is the curfew time at Our Cabaña.

All valuables including passports, money and tickets can be stored in a small lockable cupboard located next to your bed.

Out and About

Like in any city around the world, it is important to be street-wise whilst out and about in Mexico. Look after your belongings and keep an eye on your and your friends’ bags. Markets and crowded places are favourites of pickpockets, so keep your bag closed and close to you. Be conscientious and do not flash your money or valuables around – not only might it attract pick pockets, but it is also culturally insensitive.

To stay safe whilst out and about:

  • Beware of traffic. Drivers are quite aggressive due the large population. Be sure you look both ways before entering a roadway.
  • Always keep the door to your hotel room locked and only open it for someone you know. Call the office if you are unsure who is at the door.
  • Understand hotel emergency systems and escape routes.
  • Stay in groups and always use the buddy system to track everyone’s whereabouts.
  • Carry some form of identification. Make sure each member of your group knows the address and phone number where you are staying.
  • Do not carry travel documents with you. Leave then in a locked suitcase in your locked hotel room.
  • Watch where you are walking – Mexican sidewalks can be uneven or non-existent.
  • Do not draw attention to yourself in public. If someone tries to get your attention, ignore them and keep walking. Stay with your group to avoid being hassled.

My mom, grandmother, and I came to visit Our Cabana and Mexico City in early March. As we were not a part of a session at Our Cabana we travelled on our own throughout Cuernavaca and Mexico City.

We had a wonderful time and at no point did I feel unsafe. Cuernavaca and Mexico City are beautiful places to visit and the people are very helpful.I had worked at our Cabana two years previous and did not feel that Cuernavaca or Mexico City had changed despite news reports that it was dangerous.

Like most have said experience Mexico! It is great and you won't regret it, take the same precautions you would take anywhere and you are guarnteed to have a good time, and don't forget to try the tamales.
Best,
Rachel

I attended the Butterfly Session at Our Cabana and stayed at Ticalli in Mexico City beforehand and in Merida in the Yucatan afterward. At no time did I feel unsafe. I highly recommend all three.

We too were at the Butterfly session for Thinking Day. We also spent 4 days in Mexico City after the event. The whole time at Our Cabana I felt nothing but safe! Even in Mexico city, were we met up with an old friend and she took us on the city bus, and the subway. we felt very safe. The only advice she gave us about riding public transportation was have your back pack in front. Don't make it easy for the pick pockets. Even she said when she does this she never has any problems. We LOVE it there and can't wait to go back!

I have just returned from a stay at Our Cabana and Ticalli, both places secure and safe. I would have no hesitation about going again.

I visited for the Butterfly Session this year and can only concur with everyone else's comments - in Mexico City and Cueranvaca, Taxco or Angangueo you feel safe and cared for by everyone concerned. Just live our motto and 'be prepared'as you would when travelling anywhere.

I have also just returned from Mexico where our group of 7 Guiders spent 3 days in Mexico City staying at Ticalli and then attending the Thinking Day & Butterfly Session at Our Cabana. This was my third wonderful visit but leaving was a little easier knowing that I will be returning in August with a group of Pathfinders. I have been able to reassure both the parents and the girls that travelling in Mexico with a Guiding group has never been a problem. We will of course review basic safety precautions for travelling as we always do, whether it be to downtown Toronto or an unfamiliar place. I have never felt threatened in Mexcio City or Cuernavaca nor have my groups ever had problems with harassment or pickpockets. On the contrary, we have always been greeted with friendly smiles and offers of assistance. Hope to see you at Our Cabana!

I recently spent 2 weeks in Mexico, attending the Thinking Day session at Our Cabana and staying at Ticalli in Mexico City either side of the session. I was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness of the local people and did not feel uncomfortable at any time. Both Ticalli and Our Cabana staff were very helpful and advised on places to go, and the tour companies were excellent. We took the usual care when out and about which did not limit our ability to have fun, and I would recommend the trip to anyone.

A group of us from Dallas, TX attended the Thinking Day/Butterfly event in February 2009. Several members of our group had expressed concerns about safety before our departure and we had shared articles via email that spoke of the problems in Mexico. Once there, though, we had no difficulties. In fact, it wasn't until we'd been there a week that I even remembered our earlier worries. The Cabana facility felt secure, the staff was so friendly and helpful, and the adventures were so much fun, it would have been hard to fret. I'm so glad we went forward with our plans to attend!

My daughter has just returned from a week in Oaxaca and Puebla, which, like Cuernavaca, are in the interior, rather than border regions. Like Polly wrote, you must be careful anywhere, but after my experience at Cabana, my husband and I felt comfortable giving her trip our blessing.

Liz Daniels - 21 March 2009 - 6.41PM (GMT)

Before our recent trip our group we had also heard of and seen press reports of violence etc in Mexico. I can say though that at no time did we encounter any problems. The staff at both Ticalli and Our Cabana were marvellous and looked after us and our welfare at all times. I would go back tomorrow given half a chance.
