Getting ready for your event

Program at Our Cabaña

The program at Our Cabaña includes a variety of activities – wide games, arts and crafts, swimming, singing, a Mexican fiesta, workshops on current WAGGGS initiatives, and, during most events, an opportunity to participate in one of our service projects with the local community. Each event may include sightseeing and shopping trips to Cuernavaca, Taxco (a silver city), the rural village of Tepoztlán where there is a traditional Mexican craft market or to the archaeological site of Xochicalco.

The majority of the events at Our Cabaña are bilingual with everything being conducted in both English and Spanish. We recommend that you try to learn some basic Spanish words prior to your trip to help you during your stay. It’s fun learning a new language!

We recommend that all participants know the Our Cabaña Song, something about the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), and be familiar with the history of Mexico. Please also know the Promise of your Association. The songs and promises are used in ceremonies at Our Cabaña.

Log Book

While at Our Cabaña, each group will be given an 11 inch x 15 inch (40 cm. x 30 cm.) double-sided page to illustrate for the Log Book of Our Cabaña. It is suggested that you plan your page in advance, perhaps using postcards, patches, group photographs or other illustrations, but please remember that pages cannot be three-dimensional.

International Festival

One very fun and interesting activity during the event is the International Festival.  This is when each travel group does a presentation about their country, community, province, state, or even their troop or unit for the rest of the participants.  The festival, like all the activities at Our Cabaña, is conducted in English and Spanish. We will have a room with different tables where each travel group will be able to set up a stand with information about their home and the activities that they do as a troop. You are also welcome to bring food to share. We don’t have a cooking area so you will have to bring the food already prepared. We can lend you trays, plates, and silverware.

During the festival each group will also have 5 minutes to do a presentation. The idea is to share something traditional and unique from your homeland – this could be a song, a dance, a play, or anything that would be interesting to other people.

Mexican Fiesta

There will also be a Mexican Fiesta in your event, and you might like to bring suitable party clothes to wear.
